 For more than 100 years Pontresina has been the pioneer town when it comes to
permafrost and avalanche- safety aspects. The dams were completed 2003 and protect
against avalanches, as well as problems caused by the slowly thawing permafrost. The construction spreads over an area 6.3ha. in all, for which over 3ha. of old wood and young forests needed to be cleared. The project costed the Pontresina community alone 1.875 million. 75% of the costs were carried by the state and the provincial authorities.
