Known
around the world, the 'slowest fast train' on its marvellous journey across
the roof of Europe, from the Bernina mountain range to mount Matterhorn,
is the closest thing to a flight over the Alps.
The 270km trip from Pontresina to Zermatt takes you right along the Alps,
negotiating 291 bridges and 91 tunnels along the way. Travelling along
the mighty valley basins cut by the Rhine and Rhône rivers, the
Glacier Express passes through one of the vastest Alpine areas.
Seat reservation is mandatory on all Glacier Express trains and can be
made at any Swiss train station or travel agent's
From
Glacier Ice to Gelato al Limone
Travel from north to south or in the opposite direction, from spring to
summer, from summer to autumn, or from autumn to winter. Experience travelling
by train at its best, passing through various seasons and cultures. Start
the only train journey crossing the Alps from either Chur or Pontresina.
The Bernina Express will take you to the highest train line crossing the
Alps and cover one of the steepest gradients (7%) any train around the
globe does without rack-and-pinion assistance.
Seat reservation is mandatory on Bernina Express
trains (CHF 12 per person and way).
Given that Bernina Express rides are in very high demand, we recommend
early reservation of seats, in particular for groups.
Single Seats
On Bernina Express trains that are not subject to mandatory seat reservation,
single seats may still be reserved in both 1st and 2nd class.
Single seats, including the Tirano-Lugano bus ride in either direction,
may also be reserved through electronic booking systems (such as EPR or
START).in all of Europe.
Heidi on her way to Italy
This
time round, Heidi is not leaving her grandfather to travel north to see
Clara and Frau Rottenmeier but to go south. Incredible, what there is
to see there! Colourful meadows to start with, Davos, the Engadine, mountains
growing ever taller with their mighty peaks of rock. On the Bernina mountain
pass, the engine has to take a break, and Heidi gets to see a glacier
from very close for the first time in her life. And on the journey goes
down to the valley! Cows and goats still the same as at home but the houses
are now made of stone almost entirely. And the friendly farmers speak
Italian, "Ciao Heidi, come stai?" And Heidi wonders whether
her friend Peter has ever seen any palms.
This
is the post-bus service connecting the Engadine glaciers with the shores
of lake Como and Lago di Lugano. Take the Bernina or Glacier Express to
Pontresina and change to the Palm Express for Lugano.
There's no loose ends to the new circuit routes covered by the Engadine
Star. Thanks to the Vereina-tunnel line, RhB has a new tourist attraction
to offer.
From
the end of May to mid-October, you can see the Grisons sights by train
without the need of doing any stretch twice. You will have hours on end
to sit back and enjoy the beauty and attraction of the Engadine. The new
Engadine Star passenger train covers a circuit going through the Prättigau
region into the Lower Engadine via Klosters-Vereina, and directly on to
the National Park and Pontresina, or from Chur to Pontresina on the historic
Albula line.
Whichever way you opt for, it is certain to be an experience! After several
hours of leisure in the Upper Engadine's unique landscape, you may continue
your circuit journey, choosing the Albula or Vereina line.
Davos
- St. Moritz - Davos - Landquart
The Snowliner takes you from Landquart through the idyllic Prättigau
region to Davos and on towards Filisur through the impressive Zügen
gorge.
The journey continues on climbing the renowned Albula line into the picturesque
Engadine region to end up with us at Pontresina or in St.Moritz.
