History

Various objects found in the Pontresina region seem to indicate that the first settlements in the area date back to the Bronze Age. First official mention of Pontresina was made in the Gamertinger charter in the period from 1137 to 1139. The name Pontresina is derived from 'Ponte sarasinae', which refers to a bridge built by a man called Saraschin. As early as the Middle Ages, a great deal of people started crossing the Bernina mountain pass. Full summer railway service started on July 5th, 1910, and it was around that time that Pontresina became a tourist and health resort.
